In 1625, the village of Eisbach is gripped by fear. Disease, famine, and brutal winters have left the townspeople desperate for salvation. Katarin Jaspers, a maidservant, finds solace in the enigmatic Reverend Zacharias Engel, sent by Rome to purge the village of suspected witchcraft.
When Zacharias condemns a villager to the pyre, a fragile peace falls over Eisbach. Katarin, drawn to the reverend’s mysterious presence, begins to hope for a better future. But her feelings are complicated by the arrival of Margaretha Katz, a midwife who stirs jealousy and suspicion.
