Jo Wheeler has spent days lying unconscious in hospital. When she wakes up she is told that her husband, Jack, and baby daughter, Emmy, have been killed in the same air raid that should have killed her too.
Stricken with guilt, she visits her family’s hastily dug graves, only to meet a man who looks just like her husband.
Who is this double calling himself Jack Wheeler?
Why does he run away?
Is this a case for the police or a priest?
Jo follows Jack to the Sherwood Tavern where he meets up with an eighteen-year-old girl called Alice. Is his death a hoax so that he can run away with his new lover? In the teenager’s arms is a newborn baby.
Before Jo can get to the truth she loses track of Alice and her child in the blackout, as the blitz on Bristol resumes.
She must find where her rival has gone.
She must do so before the police.
Because DI Lockett and Detective Frances Boulten are looking for Alice too – they have found a baby girl floating in the river which they think is hers. Did a falling bomb separate mother and child, or did someone deliberately abandon her?
Jo does not know it yet, but this is only the beginning. A shadowy organisation called The New Right Club has plans to use Alice in a crime that will shock the nation.
It will take place in a few days.
If Alice is innocent, then her life is in danger too…
